Pictured is General Mayhem of Road Kill fame, a cobbled together car that looks rather shitty and mean at the same time.
So as many of you know I have an 86 Monte Carlo SS, I built this car with my dad in high school, the paint and restoration is about 10 years old now. there are many imperfections, chips, cracks, bubbles and a little rust forming.
I’d love to do a pro-touring LSX/T-56 swap and get a good suspension under it, but that’s going to be roughly 20k before I am done, and that is not considering the body or paint, which would probably be another 3-7k
I personally think that a road worn and blemished “nice” car look pretty bad, where as a car that just looks like a piece to begin with, or doesn’t even try to look nice, is more appealing. At least to me.
That being said, countless hours of body work and paint were put into my car, the stripes are paint and took about 8 hours to complete. I know my dad wouldn’t like how the car looks. And probably would be upset with the direction I took the car, and I know that I’m a grown man and its my car, but we built it together, in my eyes as much of my soul is in there, his is too.
In the end if were to go “outlaw” the car would look something like this
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Flat black, steel 17x9 wheels, 0 fucks given except for powertrain and suspension.
I’m looking for some input as to what to do. Go “0 fucks” or Keep it a nice “pro-touring” style car?

I think you should ask your dad on what to do, personally.

Sell and get a real project car

Actually, that’s a great idea.

Wouldn’t hurt to ask your dad what he thinks. Maybe finish up the Monte the way you both wanted it, then get another one later if possible and do it your way.

Sorry no, DSM’s spend more time in the garage than on the track

If you have doubts don’t go down a road that you can’t come back from. Don’t follow Road Kill, but it looks like the General didn’t have much going for it to begin with and what they did probably didn’t set the car back much, but to do what you want may require to go past a point of no return.

I mean its mostly a paint/body work consideration, not cutting up anything. no cage. etc.

I like the worn but mechanically soild route, its sweet for certain types of cars. That being said even if your car is not perfect it is still far better than what roadkill usually works with. Just do your best to keep her in shape.

I would advise against the flat paint. Its a bitch to keep up. 1st you say ahh no big deal its going to look a little rough on purpose but then you get a little gas, oil, sap, or really anything on it and it turns to shit. Otherwise go with your heart tell your dad whats up and that you plan to keep it around forever and that one day your kid will “make it his”. He’ll have to respect that.

Plasti-dip the car flat black. If you don’t like it, then it can be peeled off.

I’d keep it unpainted until you’re totally into doing it over. It’s not hurting anyone being weathered and it’s not costing you anything either. Think of it like Finnegan’s wife’s El Camino. He doesn’t want to paint it until he has to.

How about 1 or 2 fucks given. Sometimes when cars are to put together they lose there character. Just my 2 cents.

It’s a good idea, but his dad already knows we’re not having kids so he probably wouldn’t take that aspect seriously ;)

I want to do the car in a similar style to this (not twin supercharged though)

well sorted mechanics, but a very lax approach to aesthetics.

Could you just swap a manual in it now? That alone would provide much lulz and driving entertainment

The T-56 that bolts to the LT1 doesn’t bolt to an LS motor, I’d be best to do that in one shot. I could put an old 4speed in it, but then it wouldn’t be able to drive it on the highway without pulling 4500 rpm at 75mph. If I’m going to go through the trouble of a manual swap it’s going to have an LS motor.

What do you want to do with your project?
The answer to that should help you decide what direction to go.
If you want to cruise, drag, and do burnouts, the Monte is perfect.
If you want to turn, It will probably need a lot of chassis work and it’s worth considering a new starting point.

DSMs are great for exercise. Because you’re either riding your bicycle to get parts or taking the crank for a walk.
